"Based on our sociologists' predictions (which were as confident as they were entirely wrong) it was assumed that the majority of parents would opt for boys and that it was therefore necessary to 'incentivise' the birth of girls. This was implemented through a tax credit system which the popular press termed 'the gender bender'. The resulting explosion in the birth of girls marked the beginning of a period of gender imbalance which persists to this day."
